Who builds dropped kerbs in Swansea?

Swansea doesn't allow crossovers to be built by private contractors or individuals: only the City and County of Swansea's own contractor may carry out the works. After an inspection you get formal consent and a fixed price quotation.

Wales has its own planning rules. Vehicle crossings in Wales come under section 184 of the Highways Act 1980, as in England, but permitted development rights are set by the Welsh Government, so England's planning guidance doesn't apply. See the Welsh Government's householder permitted development technical guide (PDF) or ask Swansea's planning team.

You don't need to find a contractor for the crossing. Swansea builds dropped kerbs itself, so apply to the council and pay its quote. Use our printable checklist and timeline to get your application right first time. You can still choose your own builder for the driveway.

How much does a dropped kerb cost in Swansea?

Homeowner application fee: £136. Non-refundable fee paid when you apply, covering the administrative costs of processing the consent.

Total council fees: £136 (plus the council's price for building it).

Building it: Swansea doesn't publish a typical construction price. Councils that do publish prices quote roughly £1,000 to £3,500 for a standard crossing.
