Who builds dropped kerbs in York?
Since 1 April 2022 you can choose any contractor, as long as they're suitably qualified: at least £5m public liability insurance, all site workers accredited under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 to Operative level, with at least one Supervisor available. You send their details to the council for checking first.
How much does a dropped kerb cost in York?
Homeowner application fee: £263. Invoiced only if permission is granted (non-refundable). A betterment-only application costs £131.50; a refused application is invoiced £63.

Building it: York doesn't publish a typical construction price. Councils that do publish prices quote roughly £1,000 to £3,500 for a standard crossing.

How to apply in York
- Check you're eligible and agree to York's terms and conditions; on a classified road get planning permission first.
- Apply online for a new vehicle crossing (neighbours sharing a crossing each apply separately).
- If permission is granted you're invoiced £263; if refused, £63.
- Within 12 months of the approval letter, your contractor returns the v-form with a start date, builds the crossing, and an inspector checks it afterwards.

- If you haven't heard within 28 working days, contact the council.
- Works must be completed within 12 months of the approval letter.
Size and siting rules
- Parking space at least 6 m deep by 2.5 m wide (depth can be 5.5 m away from openings), or 3 m deep and 6 m wide for parallel parking.
- At least 10 m from a junction.
- At least 1 metre clearance from mature trees and 2 m from newly planted trees.
- Standard single crossing: 3 flat and 2 dropped kerbs; maximum 5 flat and 2 dropped kerbs.

- Mobility scooter or motorbike users can apply for a small dropped kerb of up to 1.8 m.
